In March the Garden Club of America Scholarship Committee met to review the proposed 2024 GCA scholars whose unique passion align with the GCA’s Mission to “Restore, Improve and Protect the quality of the environment.”
Due to the careful management of GCA’s endowment funds and the generosity of members, clubs, and friends, this is an historic year for scholarship. A record $459,000 was approved for 99 scholars!
Of note, twenty percent of this year’s scholarship recipients are from Zone XII, which ranges from Colorado to Hawaii. They are conducting research in a variety of fields including desert studies, native plants, medicinal botany, and urban forestry.
Details about the 2024 scholars will be published in summer issue of The GCA Bulletin magazine. They are a remarkable group of future botanists, horticulturists, landscape architects and environmental scientists.
One such worthy recipient is Gabrielle Moneymaker, a PhD candidate in Botany and Plant Sciences at the University of California, Riverside. She is the recipient of the GCA Award in Desert Studies. The Desert Studies Award will support Moneymaker’s research titled “How to Survive environmental extremes: A Giant Rosette’s Guide to the Desert.”
The future does indeed feel brighter due to the efforts of these promising young scholars!
