Four Mile House sits on the banks of Cherry Creek, just four miles from downtown Denver. It was once a wayside inn and stage stop for weary and thirsty travelers on the Cherokee Trail. It is now a Pioneer Museum and Park set on 12 acres in the Virginia Vale neighborhood of Denver. Because it is such an important part of Denver history and showcases the oldest standing structure in the city, the Garden Club of Denver worked in cooperation with Four Mile staff and the City and County of Denver to design, fund (with an anonymous donation of $25,000 from a member) and plant a water-wise garden in 2004, outside the new Grant Family Education Center. A portion of the donated funds also went towards the Children’s Heritage Garden.

The Garden Club of America gave a Burr Oak to the Garden Club of Denver in appreciation for hosting the GCA Annual meeting in 2006. This oak is planted in Four Mile Park and a GCD member and botanical artist designed the illustration for the memorial plaque.
