On September 18, 2024, 17 club members gathered at Civic Center Park to harvest vegetables and make a difference for Denver residents in need. With a wealth of enthusiasm, the club members worked with Grow Local Colorado, a non-profit dedicated to increasing access to fresh, locally grown food for those facing food insecurity. This was done in partnership with Civic Center Conservancy as part of our two-year community outreach commitment to support the organization that manages, maintains, and promotes Civic Center Park as a hub for community in the City of Denver.
With great weather, our members harvested the vegetables that thrived all summer under the care of Grow Local Colorado’s urban gardening initiative. After a couple of hours harvesting fresh produce, about six bins and three huge bags were filled with herbs, various lettuces, kale, carrots, eggplant and tomatoes. The food went directly to Metro Caring, helping to provide nutritious meals to families and individuals who need it most. Our club’s efforts were a part of the larger movement to address food insecurity in Denver, where access to healthy food can be limited.
The volunteers noted how fulfilling the experience was, inspired by the work of Grow Local Colorado, Metro Caring, and the Civic Center Conservancy. Members were also invigorated over the idea of being able to help our community in such a meaningful way. For many, it was a reminder of how our love of gardening coupled with small acts of service can make a real difference to people in the community.
Grow Local Colorado was deeply appreciative of the time the Garden Club of Denver gave. “Thanks for helping to keep the park a beautiful and nourishing place for us all,” said Co-Director Linda Kiker. The volunteer effort the club gives to Civic Center Park demonstrates the kind of significant impact that the Garden Club of Denver can make in our city.
